On Thursday, a notorious criminal was apprehended by the Special Task Force (STF) in connection with the murder of a block chief in Moradabad. This individual had been on the run since escaping from the district jail in May 2018, as reported by officials.
The criminal, identified as Sumit from the village of Naveen Gaddi in Moradabad, had a bounty of ₹2 lakh on his head. He was convicted for the assassination of Yogendra Yadav, also known as Bhura Yadav, who was shot dead in the Moradabad court complex on February 23, 2015.
Following his involvement in illegal activities while incarcerated, Sumit was transferred from Moradabad jail to Badaun jail.
On the night of May 12, 2018, he managed to escape by scaling the prison wall, firing shots during his getaway. A notorious criminal named Chandan Singh from Gorakhpur attempted to flee alongside him but was apprehended by prison staff.
Officials revealed that Sumit was captured near Bareilly while attempting to cross the Nepal border. He was subsequently brought back to Badaun and handed over to the Civil Lines police. After undergoing a medical examination, he was sent back to the district jail.
Brijesh Singh, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Badaun, stated that investigations are ongoing to identify the accomplices who aided Sumit in obtaining a firearm and facilitating his escape from jail. Authorities have also seized his movable and immovable assets accumulated during his time on the run.
